To the Honorable William Lee, to the President of the Land Commissioners whom the Mo`i has appointed to investigate the claims in the Hawaiian Islands.

Because of my understanding that you have been appointed as Deputy Land Commissioner, and the other four commissioners, J.H. Smith, Z. Kaauwai, John Ii and N. Kalawahine is on the oceanside.

Hale had received this land from Kamehameha II in the year 1846 and I had showed him where to build his house. Hale was a handyman for the King, so Kamehameha III had given him this place, but he did not tell me that this was the reason he was given this place. Therefore I was led to believe that it was because Hale was a true native that he was given this land. I have not known anyone has objected to him.
