H.E.N. Richards, Sir,
Your petitioner would respectfully set forth, that some time during 1839 or 40 he purchased some land in Lahaina - a small house lot called "Puhako" in Krikoa's Yard, the lot was purchased from Krikoa for which I gave him 5$ cash and work for the balance, of which I have the testimony of 3 competent Witnesses. On this lot I put up a house and ranai, in which I lived nearly 2 Years when I left for the other side of the Island of Maui leaving a native named Pena to live in the house during my absence of about 3 months. The ranai [lanai] & one corner of the house was pulled down. On my return I enquired by whose authority it was done & was told Kekauonohi, Governess of Mouai, had directed it. I then called on Yourself and complained & if I remember You told me I had redress in law. I went to the Judge who told me as a Chiefess had ordered it I could do nothing to recover; and thus the matter has rested. Meantime Krikoa died and his Son, Nakaio, has had possession of the lot ever since.
Your Petitioner would therefore respectfully ask the Commissioners to quiet Land titles" to investigate the case; and if in their Judgment, after heard the testimony I can produce they are satisfied ....

.... chards and Kalaikou) conversation in the year 1838 when this person here (J. Richards) had asked for a house site and Kalaikou had given it to him. A house was built and was occupied. This person here lived there for one a half years.
Keoni, sworn, I have seen Kalaikou give him (Richards) a place on which to erect a house and this person here had given Kalaikou money; however, I have never known the amount. It was acquired in 1837 or probably 1838, but I have not known the reason he had lost it. The claimant here is saying, "I had gone to claim payment for a work of building a coffin and he had chided me for having done this; therefore (it) was taken."
After the death of Kalaikou he /J. Richards/ came to tell me, "Kaeo has become angry and threatens to tear down my house," I said to him, "Don't be alarmed, it cannot be done for the houses are being protected at this time." He had repeatedly reported to me; however, later I did not know of the activities which had taken place but I did hear the house had been demolished. He /J. Richards/ is saying now that they had talked to Judd and John Young and they have commented, "We shall look into yours when the banner has been returned."
