I, Paele, a subject of the Hawaiian government, on the island of Kauai, at the fort /state that/ we, the fort soldiers have a claim which is hereby stated to you, the Honorable commissioners of the Government. One of the benefits of the soldiers of the fort is the occupation of the `ili of Kahoomano in Makaweli.
A paper for the Minister to quiet land titles, and the Commissioners. Kahoomano, an `ili of Makaweli, became a possession of the fort. When Kahalaia had the fort, Kahoomano was the land of the soldiers. His authority was ended and Kalaiohi had the authority over the fort, and this /Kahoomano/ was the land. He was terminated and Kaikioewa had authority over the fort, and it /Kahoomano/ was the land; however Kukiku was in it. He returned to Koloa, and the authority was transferred to Kapuniai, and /Kahoomano/ was still the land. Kaikioewa died and Elia returned to Koloa and Kekua, their kaikaina, had the land. The fort was transferred to Kamoopohaku, and this /Kahoomano/ was still the land. Kauai came under the control of M. Kakauonohi it was really taken by the fort - a fault of Kamoopohaku this was the conveying of Kahoomano to Manono; however, the soldiers continued to possess the lo`is they had. Some lo`is went to the Konohiki. M. Kekauonohi returned /to Oahu/ and P. Kanoa governed, and the lo`is of the soldiers were possessed /by them/ and the lo`is of this Konohiki were also held. Manono died ....

On the H-K, 90 fathoms on this side is the land of Hakoia
On the H-M, 120 fathoms - that is the stream side
On the K-H, 135 fathoms - that is the Waimea stream side
On the north, 78 fathoms - that is the side adjoining Puulima.

The words of this claim are similar. Therefore I, S.P. Iasona, believe this is one claim. Therefore I left off the diagram and the last words of the letter.

Paele, Claimant, appeared and stated that he does not claim the land named in this as his own but he put in the Claim to the commission only in behalf of the fort, in which he is captain. therefore the subcommissioners supposing said land to belong to the Government do not take testimony concerning it.
